The glamour’s arrived in NXT, but not under the name you’d expect. Mariah May is gone—on paper, anyway. In her place, WWE has introduced Blake Monroe, a rebranded identity rolled out Tuesday night in a vignette styled like a Sabrina Carpenter video—clean, pop-friendly, and carefully staged.
The move wasn’t unexpected. Rumors had circled that May would adopt a new name once she made her on-screen debut. Now that the curtain’s been pulled back, fans are digging into the reasoning behind it—and what they’re finding is complicated.

According to reports, “Blake Monroe” is a tribute hybrid: Blake nods to May’s real-life niece, while Monroe is pulled from the obvious playbook—Marilyn. A blonde bombshell invoking Hollywood royalty. Safe, nostalgic, familiar. Except, not quite.
As some fans quickly pointed out, Blake Monroe is already a name with some baggage—specifically in the adult entertainment world. There’s a retired adult film actress who went by the same name, and more notably, a current burlesque and adult performer still active under it. That Monroe, not associated with WWE in any capacity, holds titles like Miss Burlesque United States and Best Fire at Miss Nude World—a different kind of fireworks show than what airs on Tuesday nights.

This isn’t new territory for WWE. They’ve stumbled here before. Back in 2015, a planned stable called Submission Sorority—featuring Paige, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch—was quietly renamed after someone at HQ finally Googled the term and realized it was already deep in the porn archives. Paige, reportedly, had warned them in advance.
There was also the Gunther Stark debacle—where a proposed ring name matched that of a Nazi U-boat commander. That name got pulled quickly too, but not before headlines were made.
Now, with Blake Monroe, we’re watching WWE walk that tightrope again—either unaware or unconcerned about the overlap. Fans are split. Some say it’s a harmless coincidence; others argue that a billion-dollar company should have a firmer grip on basic digital research.
As of now, WWE hasn’t addressed the situation, and the name stands. Whether Mariah May—Blake Monroe—can shape it into something that rises above the past, or whether the company decides to pivot once again, remains to be seen.
But if history is any indicator, they may want to keep the trademark filings on standby.
