Erin Doherty Wins First Emmy for Netflix’s Adolescence

Erin Doherty is now an Emmy winner. The 32-year-old actress took home her first award Sunday night, winning Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in Netflix’s Adolescence.

“Looks like I’ll be banging on about Adolescence and Owen Cooper for the rest of my life — there are worse things,” Doherty said in her acceptance speech. She thanked the full cast and crew before singling out Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters, calling them “generosity personified.”

Doherty beat out Ruth Negga (Presumed Innocent), Deirdre O’Connell (The Penguin), Chloë Sevigny (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Jenny Slate (Dying for Sex), and Christine Tremarco (Adolescence).

In the series, Doherty plays clinical psychologist Briony Ariston, tasked with interviewing 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) — a boy accused of murder — to determine his state of mind before trial. Earlier in the night, Cooper won Best Supporting Actor for the same series.

Adolescence dominated the ceremony, also winning Best Limited Series, along with directing and writing honors, bringing its total to six awards.
