Grimes has always been one to blur the line between art, performance, and self-experimentation. Her latest move — a nearly invisible face tattoo — has her fans split between admiration and bewilderment.
The 37-year-old musician revealed the new ink in a recent Instagram post, a faint circular mark near her left eye. “Spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo,” she wrote, “but I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed.” She added that not even her parents had spotted it, despite her appearance in her new music video, Artificial Angels.

The tattoo was designed by Glyphomancer, an artist known for “cybersigilism” — an aesthetic that fuses ancient symbols with a futuristic, cyberpunk sensibility. Grimes praised the artist’s work, calling it “novel and innovative,” and suggested that tattoos are in a “crazy renaissance period that’s sort of underappreciated right now.”
She later doubled down on X, noting that while the tattoo might be imperceptible, it’s her favorite one yet.
Reactions were immediate and divided. “Is the face tattoo in the room with us??” one fan joked, while another compared the delicate ring to “Ringworm.” Others praised the subtlety: “It looks so great on you,” one wrote. “Gorgeous — like always,” added another.

Grimes has never hidden her fascination with transformation. In 2023, she unveiled a red-ink leg tattoo and once said she hoped to be “totally covered” in “alien” tattoos. Years earlier, she hinted at her face-ink ambitions, teasing the idea of a white-ink design.
Now, after years of anticipation, she’s done it — and true to form, it’s not what anyone expected. The tattoo barely registers to the naked eye, yet it’s already provoked a full-blown cultural debate. Exactly the kind of paradox Grimes seems to live for.
