Kate Winslet Reveals She Kissed Girls and Boys as a Teen

Kate Winslet is revisiting her teenage years with a candor she says she has never shared publicly before.

Speaking on Wednesday’s episode of the Team Deakins podcast, the Oscar-winning Hollywood star said she “kissed a few girls [and] boys” during her first intimate experiences as a teenager, describing the period as one marked more by curiosity than definition.

“At that stage in my life, I certainly was curious,” Winslet said, adding that she was not “particularly evolved in either direction.”

The reflection, she explained, helped shape her understanding of Heavenly Creatures, the 1994 film that starred Winslet and Melanie Lynskey as two teenage girls bound by an intense and ultimately destructive relationship. Winslet described feeling immediately drawn into the emotional gravity of the story.

“There was something about the really intense connection that those two women had,” she said, noting the vulnerabilities and insecurities that pulled the characters together and later tore them apart.

Winslet’s own early romantic life entered the public eye when she was 15, during her relationship with actor Stephen Tredre, who was 12 years older. The two were together from 1991 until 1995.

In 1998, she married filmmaker Jim Threapleton. They welcomed a daughter, Mia, now 25, before divorcing in 2001. Winslet remarried in 2003, tying the knot with director Sam Mendes, with whom she shares a 22-year-old son, Joe. That marriage ended in 2010.

Two years later, Winslet married Edward Abel Smith. The couple remain together and share a 12-year-old son, Bear.

The actress has long kept her private life out of public reach. In a 2015 interview with WSJ. Magazine, she spoke openly about that decision, saying she was “proud” of maintaining her silence.

“No one really knows what has happened in my life,” Winslet said at the time. “No one really knows why my first marriage didn’t last; no one knows why my second didn’t.”

Asked about her multiple marriages, she was direct. “It’s just those are the cards that life dealt me. I didn’t plan on it being that way. And f–k me, it hasn’t been easy.”

It’s a sentiment that mirrors her latest reflections: unvarnished, unsentimental, and firmly her own.
