Kayla Nicole had her own statement to make on Tuesday, hours after news broke that her former partner Travis Kelce is engaged to Taylor Swift.
The 33-year-old media personality reposted a video of actress Tracee Ellis Ross speaking about joy as a practice rather than a fleeting emotion. “I think joy is different from happiness,” Ross says in the clip. “Happiness is something you can get at 7-Eleven. Joy is something you earn and work for. It takes practice.”
Nicole added her own reflection, referencing Kay Warren’s book Choose Joy: Because Happiness Isn’t Enough. “Read about this concept years ago,” she wrote. “I aspire. So so good.”
The timing was clear. Kelce and Swift, both 35, had just revealed their engagement with a set of photographs—captioned, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married”—showing the couple in a garden, Swift displaying a diamond ring the size of a headline.
For Nicole, the message wasn’t bitterness. It was distance. Choosing joy, even when the internet is consumed by someone else’s love story, is its own declaration.
