Reneé Rapp Fires a Shot at ‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ in New Track

Reneé Rapp isn’t pulling punches anymore.

In her new single “Leave Me Alone,” dropped May 21, the 25-year-old singer and former Sex Lives of College Girls star seems to take a direct swing at the HBO Max series she exited in 2023.

“I took my sex life with me, now the show ain’t f–king,” Rapp sings in the second verse—one part clever, one part cold-blooded. No official confirmation that it’s a diss, but no denial either. The internet didn’t need a press release.

Rapp played Leighton Murray, a closeted rich girl turned out-and-proud roommate, for two seasons before walking away. The show, produced by Mindy Kaling, limped through one more installment before being axed earlier this year.

Her issues with the role weren’t secret. On Call Her Daddy earlier this year, Rapp said her first season on set was “terrible.” She talked openly about the anxiety she felt playing a queer character while navigating her own bisexual identity, saying she lived in “panic constantly.”

She eventually found her footing, and by the time she bowed out, the tone had softened. “Playing Leighton changed my life,” she posted in a farewell note last July. “She’s such a tiny part of representation, but even the tiny parts count.”

The sentiment didn’t last. Leave Me Alone marks a pivot from gratitude to grit. It’s not a total burn-down, but it’s enough to make HBO wince.

Kaling responded graciously at the time of Rapp’s departure, calling it “sad to say goodbye to Leighton Murray.” But Rapp’s latest line suggests that behind the curated statements and Instagram farewells, not everything was as harmonious as it seemed.
