Sophie Turner, the Game of Thrones alum turned modern-day adventurer, has hit a speed bump — or rather, a back bump — on the set of Amazon’s upcoming Tomb Raider series. The 30-year-old, who plays Lara Croft, suffered a minor back injury during filming, prompting MGM and Amazon to hit the pause button for a couple of weeks while she recovers.
Turner isn’t just walking onto set in stilettos and expecting magic. Since February 2025, she’s been grinding through eight-hour-a-day training sessions to physically embody the tomb-raiding heroine. That regimen, intense even for seasoned athletes, exposed a “perpetual back problem” she hadn’t fully known she had. On SiriusXM’s Julia Cunningham Show, Turner admitted the routine pushed her body to its limits, forcing months of adaptation to build strength in a frame that had rarely done this kind of work before.

The injury isn’t some random set mishap — it’s the cumulative toll of a pre-existing condition aggravated by long days of stunts, climbing, and all the Lara Croft acrobatics the crew demands. Sources told The Sun that Turner threw herself into the role with reckless dedication, and the production wisely decided a break was better than risking something long-term.
In other words, the heroine off-screen is paying the price for embodying the heroine on-screen. Fans will have to wait a couple of weeks for Sophie to return, but if her commitment is any indication, she’ll be back flipping, climbing, and swinging through tombs like she owns them — and maybe a little wiser about her back along the way.
