Chrissy Metz spent years sceptical of GLP-1 medications. Now, at 45, the This Is Us actress is taking one — and she already knows people will have something to say about it.
Metz, who is working with Ro, said she decided to try a GLP-1 after years of attempting diets and other approaches that failed to deliver the results she wanted.
“I’m not getting any younger,” Metz told PEOPLE. “I’m in perimenopause, and there were obesity issues within my family and with my father, and I felt like I’ve tried so many modalities, whether it was diets or therapy, and none of it really worked for me.”

She had initially been firmly against the idea.
“I was like, ‘I’m not taking this medication. I don’t wanna do this. It’s not gonna work for me,’” she recalled.
That changed when Metz began to recognise how much what she describes as “food noise” was occupying her thoughts.
“It’s so nice not to be obsessing about what I’m going to have every minute, even as I’m still consuming the meal,” she said.
Metz also says she has experienced improvements in her mobility, joint pain and inflammation. That has become particularly relevant as she performs on Broadway in & Juliet, where she says she is now able to do things that would have been more difficult before.
For all the discussion around GLP-1 drugs, Metz says her decision ultimately came down to taking better care of herself.
“My thinking was, how can I better myself and put myself first, which has always been the bane of my existence because I’m a people pleaser,” she said.

She also expects criticism. Metz has previously faced scrutiny over her weight, and she points out the strange position celebrities can find themselves in when it comes to GLP-1s.
“Before, people were like ‘Why isn’t she on a GLP-1?’ and now they’re going to know I’m on it and be like, ‘Why is she on a GLP-1?’”
Her response is simple: the decision belongs to her.
“They’re not in my life. They’re not in my doctor’s notes,” Metz said, adding that she has learned not to engage with comments that make her feel bad.
Metz is also resisting the idea that the medication is a shortcut. She is working with a trainer, lifting weights and focusing on building muscle, while deliberately avoiding a target number on the scales.
“I know it’s not a magic wand, and I need to change other things,” she said.
Instead, Metz says she wants to feel stronger and more comfortable without allowing a number on the scale to dictate her day.
“I’m just a regular old girl who is trying her best.”
