More than 15 years after quietly ending her first marriage, Emmy Rossum has opened up about the emotional circumstances that led her to say “I do” far sooner than she ever should have.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the Shameless star revealed that her ex-husband, music producer Justin Siegel, presented her with a life-changing ultimatum just months into their relationship. Rossum explained that after she landed a role in Dragonball: Evolution, requiring her to spend six months filming in Durango, Mexico, Siegel questioned whether the relationship could survive the distance.

According to Rossum, his response was simple: they should either break up or get married. Facing the prospect of another painful separation after two difficult heartbreaks, she admits fear clouded her judgement. “Abandonment is my core wound,” she said, explaining that the thought of another relationship ending felt unbearable at the time. Convinced that divorce would be relatively uncomplicated if things didn’t work out, she agreed.
The wedding itself happened with remarkable speed. Rossum recalled Siegel downloading a marriage contract from the internet and arranging for an officiant to come to her home. Wearing a white turtleneck she found in her wardrobe, she went through with the ceremony while quietly ignoring the doubts she says were already surfacing. She deliberately kept the marriage secret, admitting she instinctively knew it wasn’t the right decision.

The couple remained married while Rossum filmed in Mexico, although she revealed Siegel never visited during the six-month shoot. Once she returned home, she said it quickly became clear they were fundamentally incompatible. Siegel filed for divorce in September 2009, with the split finalised the following year.
Rossum also shared that her own mother had no idea she had married until the relationship was already over. When she finally broke the news while asking for help finding a divorce lawyer, her mother immediately stepped in to support her through the separation, something Rossum says she will always appreciate.
The actress has since found lasting happiness. After a relationship with Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, she met writer and director Sam Esmail in 2013. The pair married in 2017 and now share two young children together, with Rossum reflecting on her first marriage as a lesson in listening to instincts rather than fear.
