Former Skins star Megan Prescott has opened up about how joining OnlyFans changed her finances after she was left with just £300 in her bank account.
Prescott, now 33, played Katie Fitch in the cult E4 drama from 2008 to 2010, alongside her real-life twin sister Kathryn Prescott, who played Katie’s twin Emily. The series ran from 2007 to 2013 and became a launching pad for actors including Dev Patel, Nicholas Hoult, Daniel Kaluuya and Kaya Scodelario.
Set in Bristol, Skins followed a group of teenagers dealing with relationships, drugs, mental health and the general chaos of growing up. Its willingness to tackle subjects that other teen dramas avoided turned it into a cultural landmark, and Prescott still sees the show’s influence today.
“Even now, people still compare shows to it like Euphoria,” she told Metro. “And Gen Z is rediscovering Skins on Netflix and making it relevant again.”
For Prescott, the job was a dream at the time. But when the show ended, the reality of building a career in television arrived quickly.
“I couldn’t have asked for anything better, it was all I wanted,” she said. “Then after Skins, I had a bit of a reality check where I was like, ‘oh, actually, you don’t just go from a TV show to Hollywood’.”
With only occasional acting work coming her way, Prescott took on multiple jobs to make ends meet and eventually entered the sex industry. She said the decision came with plenty of stigma and “internalised misogyny”.
Her circumstances changed during the Covid-19 pandemic when the manager at her minimum-wage job refused to give her furlough. With just £300 left in her account, she took a friend’s advice and launched an OnlyFans account.
Prescott says the move “completely changed my life”.
She explained that she was also preparing for a stage production featuring a nude scene about contextual and conditional consent, which made her question why she should be uncomfortable with nudity when it was already part of her work.
“I’m autistic so I’m very logical,” she said. “I needed money for a show that involves a nude scene where I talk about contextual and conditional consent.”
For Prescott, OnlyFans became another way of making use of something that had already been part of her career.
“There’s nothing shameful about sex work. There’s nothing shameful about OnlyFans,” she said. “The world didn’t end. Nakedness is fine.”
After finding fame as a teenager on one of Britain’s most notorious TV dramas, Prescott has clearly taken a different route from many of her former Skins castmates. But the message behind her story is straightforward: when the traditional entertainment industry left her scrambling for work, OnlyFans gave her another option.
