Hunter Schafer Opens Up About 2025 Surgery: ‘I’m a Woman. I’m a Girl’

Hunter Schafer has spoken publicly about undergoing gender-affirming surgery in December 2025, describing the experience as “amazing” in a new interview with Elle magazine.

The 27-year-old Euphoria actress discussed the decision as part of a broader conversation about gender identity, personal freedom and the realities of navigating life as a transgender woman. “I love it so much,” Schafer said of the surgery, in the interview published Monday.

Schafer began transitioning at 14 and explained that, for years, she had explored the idea of living outside conventional gender boundaries. She wanted to see whether she could make her previous body work for her, describing the idea as “cool and badass”. Ultimately, however, surgery was the right choice.

“For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself,” she reflected, adding that she no longer feels uncertain about her identity. “I’m a woman. I’m a girl.”

The comments mark another chapter in Schafer’s evolving relationship with the public discussion around being transgender. In a 2024 interview with GQ, she spoke about her frustration at being defined primarily by her transition, saying she wanted audiences to focus on her work rather than reduce her to a single aspect of her identity.

She also explained that she had deliberately turned down numerous transgender roles, keen to establish herself as an actress beyond that category. Her career has included modelling, acting and her breakout performance as Jules Vaughn in HBO’s Euphoria.

Now, Schafer appears open to exploring transgender experiences on screen in a different way. In her Elle interview, she expressed interest in starring in a romantic comedy centred on a transgender woman.

“I’ve been thinking about that for a while,” she said. “I would like to make that happen.”

For Schafer, the distinction appears to be having a say in how her story is told. She has made clear that she wants the freedom to define herself, both on screen and off, rather than have others decide which parts of her identity should define her career.
