Mariah Carey Kicks Off Christmas in a $19,500 Crystal-Studded Gucci Gown

Mariah Carey has officially clocked in for Christmas. The undisputed Queen of Christmas stars in Gucci’s latest holiday campaign, bringing a little celebrity firepower and plenty of expensive wardrobe choices to a festive short film directed by Spring Breakers filmmaker Harmony Korine.

The campaign follows hotel staff scrambling to prepare a Christmas party for the superstar, 57, with more than $50,000 worth of Gucci clothing and accessories making an appearance across two extravagant looks. It opens with a pair of Gucci logo stiletto boots, priced at $2,300, stepping out of a black car, followed by an oversized fur coat from the label’s upcoming Cruise 2027 collection. Carey was, naturally, already sitting front row when the collection made its debut.

Inside, hotel porters are busy shifting mountains of presents, decorating the Christmas tree and stringing up the tinsel. Guests add their gifts and light candles, all in preparation for the arrival of the evening’s headline act. By the time Carey emerges from the elevator, the party is in full swing.

For her entrance, the singer wears a butterfly-print Gucci dress costing $4,600, paired with a crystal-encrusted Double G choker worth $2,400, frameless sunglasses covered in crystals ($1,295) and a purple Gucci Aperitivo shoulder bag priced at $3,550. Subtlety was never really part of the Carey wardrobe vocabulary.

The butterfly design comes from Gucci’s new Butterfly special collection, which takes inspiration from the shimmering colours of butterfly wings. It also happens to be a motif closely associated with Carey. Her 1997 album Butterfly helped cement the imagery as part of her personal brand, a theme she has continued to embrace over the years, including in her jewellery collection.

Later in the film, Carey makes another entrance, this time in a champagne-coloured asymmetrical gown covered in sparkling crystals and carrying a $19,500 price tag. If there was ever any doubt about who owns the Christmas season, Gucci has just provided a fairly expensive reminder.
