Miley Cyrus appears to be trimming things down. The “Flowers” singer has quietly dropped “Cyrus” from her social media profiles, leaving behind the kind of mononymous identity usually reserved for Cher, Madonna, Prince and Beyoncé.
Call her Miley. That’s apparently enough.
The timing is interesting. Cyrus is reportedly working on her 10th studio album, and the sudden name change has all the fingerprints of an artist preparing to turn the page. Her new profile picture isn’t exactly subtle either: Miley is bathed in red light, wrapped in a huge Saint Laurent faux-fur coat and looking every inch like someone about to unveil a new chapter.
There’s also a neat piece of symmetry here. Cyrus released her debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus, in 2007. If her 10th record arrives around the 20th anniversary of that release, a self-titled album would hardly need much explanation. Just Miley.
The music itself appears to be taking a more personal route. Earlier this year, Cyrus told Wonderland magazine that the album is a love story, while stressing that the subject is anything but simple.
“But love stories are never one-dimensional. They’re always layered,” she said, describing the record as a reflection of where she is in life and saying its romantic thread has stayed with her through multiple eras.
That makes sense given the singer’s current chapter. In December, Cyrus and her boyfriend of more than four years, Maxx Morando, announced their engagement.
Cyrus has also spoken about a “peaceful kind of love” running through her last three albums, but says the idea goes beyond romance. The new record, she explained, is also about the relationship she has built with herself.
And if the social media makeover is anything to go by, Miley is ready to put that version of herself front and centre.
