Alex Cooper’s reality TV ambitions have hit a snag, with Disney cancelling her Hulu dating series Love Overboard after just one season.
The nine-episode show, produced by Cooper’s Unwell Productions, premiered on Hulu in March and followed 22 singles as they searched for romance aboard a yacht. Former Bachelorette and Traitors winner Gabby Windey hosted the series, while Cooper served as an executive producer.
According to sources cited by Page Six, Disney decided against a second season because the show “wasn’t finding its audience”.
The cancellation comes shortly after another setback for Cooper’s Unwell brand. Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that the company was discontinuing its line of Unwell beverages, adding another blemish to what has otherwise been a rapid expansion for the media personality.
Cooper first became a household name as co-host of Call Her Daddy, the sex and dating podcast that began under Barstool Sports before becoming a major Spotify property. She later signed a reported $60 million, three-year deal with Spotify, with Time describing her as “arguably the most successful woman in podcasting”.
Despite the recent reversals, Unwell remains a significant business. The company recently received an investment from WTSL, the investment firm founded by Patrick Whitesell, in a deal reportedly valuing Unwell at $500 million.
Cooper is also moving forward with other projects. In June, Hulu announced that The Vampire Diaries stars Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley would lead You Deserve To Know, a scripted drama from Unwell Productions.
Disney also appears keen to keep working with Cooper despite the reality show cancellation. A source told Page Six: “Disney has a great relationship with Alex and is in development with her on a few projects.”
Cooper also recently left UTA for rival agency CAA, according to reports.
So while Love Overboard has reached the end of the line, Cooper’s relationship with Disney — and her broader push beyond podcasting — is clearly still in play.
