Rihanna went home to Barbados and did what Rihanna does best: turned up dressed like nobody else in the country had been warned.
The 38-year-old singer, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, returned to the island for Carnival and made her appearance at Grand Kadooment Day on August 3, the climactic parade that brings Barbados’ month-long Carnival season to a close. She arrived in a colossal traditional-inspired ensemble covered in peacock-coloured gems and feathers, topped off with hot pink boots.
It was less outfit than spectacle, but Rihanna has never been particularly interested in playing it safe when Carnival comes around. The singer has been turning heads at the festival since she was a teenager, long before she became a global pop star and fashion fixture. Over the years, she has appeared in everything from all-white ensembles to enormous pink feathers and a turquoise wig, treating the streets of Bridgetown as her own personal runway.
This year’s look continued that tradition with considerably more acreage. The elaborate costume was covered in shimmering stones and feathers, giving Rihanna a suitably extravagant presence as she joined the celebrations. The hot pink boots added another hit of colour while providing at least some practical consideration beneath all the ornamentation.
Her trip home also doubled as family time. Rihanna and partner A$AP Rocky celebrated the third birthday of their son Riot Rose Mayers, who turned three on August 1, with a Spider-Man-themed party. The couple also have a four-year-old son, RZA Athelston Mayers, and 11-month-old daughter, Rocki Irish Mayers.
Rihanna has previously spoken about embracing motherhood and the different sides of herself it has brought out. “It makes me feel really cool to be a boy mom,” she told E! News in 2024, before welcoming her daughter the following year. She said motherhood allowed her to be casual when she wanted while also making her embrace her femininity more openly. For Rihanna, that apparently includes turning up to Carnival in Barbados dressed in enough feathers and rhinestones to stop traffic.
