Chelsea Green has spent years turning frustration, comedy and an outsized personality into one of WWE’s most recognisable acts. At SummerSlam, she finally added a major championship to the story — and used the occasion to settle an old score.
Green became the Interim WWE Women’s Champion on Night Two of SummerSlam after winning a five-woman ladder match against Tiffany Stratton, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill and Lash Legend. The victory marked the first world title of her WWE career and capped a steady rise for a performer who has often been treated as comic relief rather than a serious contender.
Speaking on the SummerSlam post-show, Green acknowledged the odds she had faced. Her opponents included former WNBA player Lash Legend, former gymnast Tiffany Stratton, Jade Cargill, whom Green jokingly described as being “born with abs”, and Charlotte Flair, who grew up around the wrestling business.
Then came the dedication.
Green said she wanted to dedicate her victory to Michael Hayes, WWE’s Senior Producer and Vice President of Creative Writing & Booking. Hayes had previously questioned Green’s potential as a top star in Netflix’s WWE Unreal, suggesting that her role was to help established performers such as Flair and Stratton look good rather than headline herself.
Hayes later apologised following the reaction to his comments. Green, however, now has a rather effective response: a championship belt and a SummerSlam victory.
The result also reflects how Green’s character has developed over recent years. Rather than being built as an intimidating powerhouse, she has made her name through a deliberately exaggerated persona, turning complaints, tantrums and backstage chaos into some of WWE’s most entertaining television.
What began as a broad “Karen” character has become a more rounded performance, with Green consistently committing to the joke without allowing it to define her entire wrestling career. Her work in the ring has developed alongside the character, too.
Before SummerSlam, Green had already become a two-time Women’s United States Champion and had steadily established herself as a credible performer alongside her comic timing.
The ladder match gave her the perfect setting for the biggest win of her career. Amid the chaos, Green climbed higher than the competition and walked away with championship gold — and a rather pointed dedication for good measure.
