Lupita Nyong’o isn’t interested in debating the internet’s idea of who should get to embody “beauty” on screen. She’s working.
The 12 Years a Slave star has addressed backlash surrounding her casting as Helen of Troy in The Odyssey, the latest epic from director Christopher Nolan. Some of the criticism spilled into culture-war territory online, including comments amplified by Elon Musk.
Her response is blunt: “You can’t perform beauty.”

In an interview with Elle, Nyong’o pushed back on the idea that the role of Helen of Troy — traditionally described as “the most beautiful woman in the world” — is reducible to appearance alone.
“I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?” she said, framing the debate as one that misses the point of adaptation entirely.
She also noted that Homer’s Odyssey is mythology, not casting call history. “It’s quite something to be a part of ‘The Odyssey,’ because it is so grand. It spans worlds,” she said, adding that the ensemble reflects a broader, modern interpretation of the story.
Online criticism flared after casting announcements, with Musk and other commentators questioning Nolan’s decisions. The director has since defended the choice, praising Nyong’o’s “poise” and presence, saying she was central to how he envisioned the character.
In Hollywood terms, the argument is familiar: a classic role, a modern cast, and an internet audience treating mythology like it comes with fixed specs. Nyong’o’s position cuts through that noise — the work, she suggests, starts on the page, not in the comment section.
