Natasha Lyonne has found herself in the political firing line after a series of cryptic social media posts left fans questioning where she stands on Donald Trump.
The Poker Face and Russian Doll star, 47, weighed in on October 20 after sharing a reaction to a video of Vice President JD Vance speaking at a Republican rally in Hendersonville, North Carolina, the previous day. During the event, a man was escorted away after shouting about the Jeffrey Epstein files, prompting Vance to respond with a quip about illegal border crossings.
Lyonne was unimpressed. Calling Vance a “sketchy mofo,” she added the words “prefer trump” in a reply on X, before describing the vice president’s remarks as “even scarier.” She also questioned how the current political climate had become normalised, invoked the late science-fiction author Octavia Butler as “a soothsayer” and summed up the times as “Grimey times.”

The actress wasn’t finished. In a separate post, Lyonne responded to Trump praising Elon Musk after the billionaire announced plans to give one share of SpaceX stock to every child in the United States. Trump credited his “legendary friend” with supporting the administration’s proposed Trump Accounts, which are designed to provide American children with investment accounts. Lyonne’s contribution to the exchange was four emojis: a rocket, a saluting face, a sun and a smiling face wearing sunglasses.
Under the programme, eligible US citizens under 18 with valid Social Security numbers can have an account claimed by a parent or guardian. Contributions from individuals, companies and local governments are subject to a combined annual limit of $5,000.
The reaction to Lyonne’s posts was swift. Some followers interpreted the exchange as a sign of support for Trump, while others appeared unconvinced. “Oh no mama, delete this,” one user wrote, while another suggested her account had been hacked.
Whether Lyonne intended the posts as political endorsement, sarcasm or something less straightforward remains unclear. For now, the actress has managed to turn a handful of words and four emojis into a debate about her political loyalties.
The social media storm comes months after reports that Lyonne was removed from a commercial flight in April, adding another chapter to a year in which the outspoken actress has attracted attention well beyond the screen.
