Andy Cohen says a transgender woman could one day join the Real Housewives franchise — but he’s drawing a clear line between representation and what he sees as manufactured casting.
Speaking at the Newport Beach TV Fest, the Bravo executive said a trans “Housewife” would need to fit the same social ecosystem as everyone else on the show: real friendships, real history, no obvious production angle.
“I think if there was a trans ‘Housewife’ who was friends with other ‘Housewives’ that would be the way,” Cohen said, according to the Daily Mail. “You wouldn’t want it to be stunt. You know, you wouldn’t want it to be like, ‘Let’s cast into this.’ If someone was friends with that person, then that would be great.”

The framing is consistent with how Real Housewives has traditionally been built — less about formal representation strategies, more about existing social circles that happen to land on camera. Cohen added that he has “no idea what franchise that would be.”
He also revisited earlier casting discussions from the franchise’s early days, noting that The Real Housewives of New Jersey once “flirted with the idea” of casting Jaime Laurita, brother of Caroline and Dina Manzo.
“I mean, look, I think that in terms of casting a gay guy on the show — this is a show about women and celebrating women. So I’d think we’d leave it there,” he said.
The comment lands in a franchise that has gradually expanded its LGBTQIA+ presence over the years, though often in uneven and contested ways.
The Real Housewives of Orange County featured Braunwyn Windham-Burke, who came out publicly as a lesbian during her time on the show in 2020. She later said she experienced homophobia from fellow cast members, describing what she called “microaggressions” tied to her sexuality after coming out.

The Real Housewives of Miami introduced Julia Lemigova as the franchise’s first openly lesbian Housewife in the reboot era. A former model, she has been married to tennis icon Martina Navratilova since 2014.
The Real Housewives of New York City has also expanded its casting in recent seasons, including Jenna Lyons, the former J.Crew creative director, who joined the rebooted Season 14 lineup, followed by Racquel Chevremont in Season 15.
Across the franchise, the evolution has been incremental rather than structural — visibility increasing, but still filtered through casting logic that prioritizes pre-existing relationships over representational intent.
