Jennifer Lawrence Finally Joins Instagram — And Immediately Threatens to Quit

Jennifer Lawrence has finally joined Instagram, proving that even one of Hollywood’s biggest stars can stay off social media for more than a decade. Naturally, she didn’t exactly make a quiet entrance.

The Hunger Games and Joy star launched her verified account, @jlaw, on September 10, only to reveal that the username she actually wanted — @jenniferlawrence — had already been taken. Within hours, the account was closing in on one million followers.

Lawrence then posted her first video with a warning for the internet at large. “So, I’m giving it a shot,” she said. “And if anyone says anything negative, I will quit. Immediately. No questions asked.” She followed that up with another threat: “If anyone thinks something mean, I’ll know. I’ll know, and I’ll quit.”

Then came the Lawrence twist. In an Instagram Story, the actress told followers to be careful with their comments because “any mean or aggressive comments can affect the baby.” The baby, she explained, was herself. “It’s me. I’m the baby.”

For Lawrence, the reluctance is nothing new. She spent years deliberately avoiding a public social-media presence, telling BBC Radio 1 in 2014 that she wasn’t particularly good with phones or technology. Twitter, she said at the time, was an “unthinkable” concept and something she didn’t really understand.

That didn’t mean she was completely absent from the internet. In a 2019 interview with InStyle, Lawrence admitted she was more of a spectator online than a participant, saying she preferred to watch rather than speak because of the endless backlash and opinions surrounding social media. She also revealed last year that she has a secret TikTok account where she gets involved in comment-section arguments, initially discussing Real Housewives before moving on to the royal family. “I guess I rage-bait on TikTok,” she admitted. Now, for the first time, Jennifer Lawrence is doing it in public.
