Gillian Anderson has publicly identified as pansexual, while also opening up again about her past relationships with women.
The X-Files star, 58, confirmed her sexuality in a new interview with The Australian, saying she had relationships with women during her younger years. Anderson has previously spoken about dating a girl while she was at high school, describing the relationship as something that felt secretive at the time.
“In my younger years, I was in relationships with women,” she said.
Anderson has discussed her sexuality several times over the years, but said she did not necessarily have the language to define it when she was younger. She was attracted to men as well as women, and explained that her relationships with women were not necessarily viewed by her as something that would become permanent.
Her perspective has also developed through conversations with other women about sexuality and desire. Anderson said her work on Netflix’s Sex Education helped make her more open about sex and eventually contributed to her writing Want, followed by More — collections of anonymous letters about women’s desires and sexual fantasies.
Anderson has three children. She shares daughter Piper with former husband Clyde Klotz and sons Oscar and Felix with former partner Mark Griffiths. She has also been linked for years with The Crown creator Peter Morgan, although the pair have never publicly confirmed their relationship. They reportedly split in 2020 before reconciliation rumours surfaced the following year.
Anderson first spoke publicly about her relationships with women in 2012, telling Out magazine that she had been in a long-term relationship with a girl during high school. She has since made clear that while the person she considers her life partner happens to be male, she does not see gender as defining that connection. “I’d feel, ‘This is my life partner,’” she said.
