Adult star Erena So has been arrested in Hong Kong after police accused her of promoting an illegal offshore gambling website through her social media accounts.
Authorities allege the 29-year-old influencer, who built a large following before moving into the adult entertainment industry, breached Hong Kong’s strict anti-gambling laws by acting as a public face for an overseas betting platform. Gambling remains illegal in Hong Kong, both online and in person, with the exception of tightly regulated local betting. While neighboring Macau is famous for its casino industry, Hong Kong takes a far harder line.
Prosecutors at West Kowloon District Court claim So promoted a bookmaker that was targeting gamblers across Asia, despite the platform operating outside Hong Kong’s legal framework. Her legal team argued that So believed the business was legitimate and understood that it did not accept customers based in Hong Kong.
She has been charged with promoting or facilitating bookmaking, an offence that carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and a fine of up to HK$5 million (around US$638,000). She has since been released on bail while the case continues.

Gambling Promotion Under Scrutiny
Police say So only began advertising the gambling operator earlier this week, appearing in promotional posts that branded her as a “Poker Goddess” in an effort to attract new customers.
Investigators believe the company has been using influencers and online personalities to drive betting activity during the FIFA World Cup, one of the busiest periods on the global sports betting calendar. Authorities have also suggested that other local figures may have been recruited as ambassadors as part of the campaign.
The case highlights the growing role social media personalities play in marketing offshore gambling brands, particularly across Asia, where regulations vary dramatically from one country to the next.

A Career That Crosses Borders
So is well known in Japan, where she films and distributes much of her adult content. Unlike Hong Kong and mainland China, Japan permits the production and sale of adult entertainment under its own legal framework, making it a major base for the industry.
China, however, bans the production, distribution and consumption of pornography altogether. It also blocks thousands of overseas websites through its extensive internet censorship system, often referred to as the “Great Firewall.” Offshore gambling operators face similar restrictions but continue to target Chinese-speaking customers through VPN access and aggressive online marketing.
Many of these gambling businesses are licensed in jurisdictions including Curaçao, Malta, the Isle of Man, the Philippines, Panama, Costa Rica and Anjouan. They often employ large numbers of Mandarin-speaking staff in overseas call centres and live-dealer studios to reach players across the region.
The industry has also drawn growing international scrutiny in recent years, with multiple investigations linking some offshore gambling operations to labour exploitation, human trafficking and workers being lured abroad with false promises before being forced into scam compounds.
For Hong Kong authorities, the case against Erena So is about more than one adult star endorsing a betting app. It is another warning that influencers with millions of followers are increasingly becoming the marketing engine for industries operating well beyond the reach of local regulators.
