Rachel Brosnahan on James Gunn’s ‘Superman’: Truth, Justice, and a Return to Form

Rachel Brosnahan is stepping into the high heels of Lois Lane, and she’s got a front-row seat to James Gunn’s ambitious new vision for Superman. And if you ask her, it’s about damn time someone got it right.

Speaking at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards, the two-time winner wasn’t just another Hollywood starlet hyping up a blockbuster. She was downright evangelical about what Gunn and company are cooking up—something she insists stays “true to the comics” and reminds us all what the Man of Steel is really about.

“We’re living in a moment of so much turmoil, both here and abroad,” Brosnahan told Deadline. “There’s a lot of challenges for everybody in all different pockets of the world right now. And for all the complaints people have about superhero movies, at their core, they’re about the goodness of people and how good we can be to each other. The pursuit of truth and justice really is the American way.”

Heavy words, sure, but Brosnahan swears Gunn’s ‘Superman’ isn’t some grim, brooding take designed to make you question your own existence. Quite the opposite.

“I feel like this movie really encapsulates all of that. It’s a hopeful superhero movie, which I feel like is so true to the comics. So, I’m excited for audiences to see it and hopefully have some fun and enjoy the ride with us.”

Brosnahan knows she’s stepping into a legacy. Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher, Amy Adams—Lois Lane is a role that’s been played by icons. But she’s not running from it. She’s ready.

Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane

“I grew up loving the [Richard] Donner Superman movies, the Chris Reeve Superman movies, Margot Kidder. I mean, she’s just a dream,” she said. “So, I was definitely intimidated to step into this role but excited to pick up the mantle. And this team just loves this project, and it sounds like it should be a given, but it isn’t always a given that people love what they’re making to this degree.”

With David Corenswet suiting up as the new Last Son of Krypton and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor, ‘Superman’ is gearing up to bring some much-needed optimism back to the cape-and-tights game. The cast is stacked—María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and more.

Set to hit theatres on July 11, it looks like Superman is finally ready to fly again. And if Brosnahan is right, he’s bringing a little hope with him.
