Jessie Cave spent years building an acting career, but it was a $6-a-month OnlyFans page centred on her hair that finally gave her some financial breathing room.
The British actress, best known for playing Lavender Brown in the final three Harry Potter films, has revealed that she has earned more from the subscription platform than she made from her entire acting career — and said the money has effectively kept her family afloat.
Speaking to The Times, Cave, 39, said she initially expected the experiment to last only a few months.
“I thought I’d make five grand, be on it for a few months and it would buy me time to work out what we’re going to do,” she said. Instead, she has now been on the platform for more than a year and a half.
“It’s genuinely saved our lives,” Cave said.
Her OnlyFans page is built around what she calls “hair content”. Subscribers pay $6 a month for videos of Cave fully clothed, brushing, braiding or styling her hair, often while wearing costumes. She has described her approach simply: “My hair is the main character.”
The numbers, however, have been anything but small. According to The Times, Cave once made roughly $20,200 in a single day on the platform. She told the newspaper that her earnings from OnlyFans had surpassed what she made during her entire acting career, “easily”, within a year.
The move came after Cave was rejected following a callback audition and found herself facing the financial reality of raising four children with her fiancé, Alfie Brown. Acting had become increasingly difficult to sustain, particularly with childcare costs.
“I had a breakdown, and I thought, ‘That’s it with acting, I give up,’” she said. “But, also, we have no money.”
Cave has continued to work as an actor, appearing in projects including Black Mirror and Industry as well as on stage. But OnlyFans offered something the traditional entertainment industry had not: a direct way to make money from an audience without waiting for someone else to cast her.
Cave also acknowledged the platform’s reputation for adult content, while pointing out that OnlyFans extends well beyond pornography, with creators using it for everything from cooking and tarot to personal training.
For Cave, there was another appeal. After years of being known for playing eccentric characters and becoming a mother four times, she said the attention made her feel visible again.
“I’ve never posted a bikini shot,” she said. “I wear huge glasses. For so long I’ve just been this quirky figure. After having four kids and feeling invisible for so long, that was really appealing to me.”
Her ambitions for the money are practical. Cave has said she wants to get her house into shape, deal with hazardous wallpaper, replace the roof and get out of debt.
There is also a more personal goal behind the operation: investing in herself after years of putting almost everything else first.
For an actress who once made her name at Hogwarts, the strangest chapter of Jessie Cave’s career may have arrived after she left it.
