Usher’s trademark audience serenade took an awkward turn in Nashville after one fan made it clear she wasn’t interested in playing along.
The R&B star was performing alongside Chris Brown on The R&B Tour on Saturday when a woman from the crowd was invited onstage for the now-famous segment of the show, where Usher singles out a fan for some close-up attention. Usually it’s one of the night’s biggest crowd-pleasers. This time, it went sideways.
As a shirtless Usher sang directly to her, the woman appeared visibly uneasy. While he tried to draw her into the performance, lightly touching her chin and face, she remained stiff and reserved. The moment reached its breaking point when he gestured for her to recline on the bed that’s become a regular feature of the routine. Instead, she stepped back.
Usher read the room almost instantly.
“I don’t think she want to be on the stage, huh?” he asked the crowd before signalling for stage staff to escort her away. A few boos rang out from the audience as the singer moved on, looking more frustrated than amused.
The clip spread quickly across social media, with plenty of viewers questioning why the fan had agreed to go onstage if she wasn’t comfortable taking part. She wasn’t about to let that narrative stick.
Posting online after the show, she explained that nobody tells audience members exactly what they’re being brought up for.
“First off NOBODY is declining to go on stage,” she wrote. “I looked good asf, you think I wasn’t going to let THOUSANDS of people see me?”
She added that she and her mother had originally been sitting on the floor before being upgraded to the VIP section because of what she jokingly called “pretty privileges.”
“They don’t say who you’re going up there for! Y’all wanted me to go up there and f–k him atp?” she added.
The following day, she doubled down by posting selfies captioned simply: “Unbothered.”
She also pushed back against accusations that she’d been rude, writing on Instagram Stories that she wasn’t going to stay silent while strangers criticised an experience they hadn’t lived through.
Usher has built an entire concert tradition around flirtatious fan interactions, and they frequently dominate headlines. During his Past Present Future Tour in 2024, his seemingly unimpressed bodyguard became an unexpected viral star while standing stone-faced as fans were seductively fed cherries onstage.
